Greenwich Academy Field Hockey Wins 2012 Class A Title

The Gators dominated play earning more corners than the Bearcats as well as having the better part of possession in their attacking third of the field. Like in the semi, Julia met every test in the cage posting three shut out victories in the tournament. And again, her D worked tirelessly to thwart any attack the Bearcats could muster. Heading into the break, the teams were tied at 0-0 with GA's strong contingent of fans urging their team on! Both teams came of the gates at full speed each looking to get on the board first. Hotchkiss was able to convert on a corner for a precarious 1-0 lead with 13:09 to play in the contest. Then, in less than 10 seconds, GA answered. Emilia weaved up the field with the ball glued to her stick and, as she approached the circle, slipped the ball to the far post. Eva was trucking down the field and timed the ball perfectly diving to the far post edging out the keeper to put the ball on the boards -- game tied 1-1! WOW! GA continued to press and create chances but was unable to put the game away in regulation.

In West Hartford, CT they took on Rye Country Day, defeating the New York State prep school champions 9-2. Then they faced a very tough Cushing team, one of the two opponents to beat St. Mark’s in the regular season. Great goaltending by Paige Duffy ’13 and a terrific goal by top-scorer and team MVP Alexa Mackintire gave St. Mark’s a 1-0 victory. The title game was held at Loomis-Chaffee School, against Brooks. The game was scoreless into two overtimes, when Sophia Millerick ’14 scored to give St. Mark’s its first NEPSAC Field Hockey crown since 1997.
