2015 South Kent Soccer Secures Top Drawer Soccer National Title with NEPSAC Championship!
November 17, 2015
The 2015-2016 South Kent Prep Soccer team had a regular season to remember. The boys remained undefeated to achieve an untarnished record of 19-0, securing South Kent's 10th Western New England Regular Season Champion title. Though they faced many teams that were ranked well and stacked with skilled players, the chemistry of the South Kent team has stayed strong and allowed very few mistakes on the pitch. Even when a rare defensive error occurred, Detre Bell and Richard Glemawu stood strong, as shown by their unbelievable collection of 12 shutouts throughout the season. With the combination of skilled scorers, strong defense and a pair of top notch goalkeepers, the prep soccer team had everything they needed to win the NEPSAC Class B Championship, and they did just that. With the win, not only did Coach Owen Finberg get his milestone 200th win, but the South Kent team was awarded the National Title by Top Drawer Soccer.
The playoffs began at home against #8 seed Canterbury. The game was well fought especially given the disparity in ranking but South Kent emerged victorious by a score of 3-1.
Due to their #1 position on the rankings, the Cardinals played at home again for the semifinals, this time against Suffield Academy. The boys showed no signs of slowing, putting up 3 unanswered goals to end the game and secure another trip to the finals hosted at the Brooks School in North Andover, MA.
The final game, as it has for the past few years, pitted South Kent against Lawrence Academy. The two teams have battled back and forth for years, with the teams splitting victories in two title matches. These penalty kick matches ended in dramatic fashion and left this year as a pivotal tiebreaker. This time, South Kent wouldn't let the game make it to extra time. Through exhilarating, motivated play and outstanding goalkeeping once again, the Cardinals beat Lawrence by a score of 2-0 to secure the NEPSAC title, their 7th in 10 years, and put a cherry on top of their perfect run.
The boys will always remember this season as one where they not only achieved victory at the end, but in every single step along the road to the championship. Their untarnished season will remain as one of the greats in the South Kent history book. Congratulations to all the boys who dedicated themselves to this goal and their leaders, Head Coach Owen Finberg and Assistant Walter Moore. Without the consistent effort of all involved, including their mentors, an achievement so great never could have been realized. Way to go Cardinals! We can't wait to see what you will bring to the pitch next year.
