Kimball Union Academy Wins 2012 NEPSAC Simmons/Piatelli Championship!
A Nick Roberto overtime goal with 1:56 remaining in the first OT propelled KUA to a 3-2 win and the Simmons/Piatelli NEPSIHA Championship today at the Salem Icecenter. The winning goal started when Casey Miller stripped a Holderness defenseman of the puck and spotted Roberto alone in front. Roberto made no mistake and buried a wrister high over the Holderness goalie.
Both teams had quality chances in the OT period, but were thwarted by KUA's Ryan Lund ( 28 saves) and Holderness' andy Monroe (40 saves).
The games first period ended 0-0 with Monroe making some spectatcular saves to keep the game tied. In the second Holderness took a 1-0 lead that was quickly answered by KUA. Connor Evangelista's beautiful stretch pass to Jonathan Charbonneau, sent the KUA junior in alone against Monroe, Charbonneau lifted the puck over the glove hand of the Holderness goalie. In the third, a minute in, Niko Rufo rushed down the left side and as he cut to the middle of the ice released a low wrist shot beating Monroe. Nine minutes later, with Holderness on the power play, a slap shot from the right point tied the game at two and sent it to OT where Roberto would be the hero for KUA.
The Wildcats end the season at 27-4-3. The 27 wins is a new school single season record.
