Westminster Boys' Hockey: 2011 Martin/Earl Large School Champions!
Two Championships Celebrated

Both the First Girls’ Hockey team and First Boys’ Hockey team concluded their seasons by winning tournaments.

The girls’ team (25-1) retained their crown as Division I New England Champions by beating Nobles in the final, 3-1. After decisive victories over Loomis (5-2) and Lawrence Academy (4-0), the Martlets faced an evenly matched Nobles team, which Westminster had not faced earlier in the season. Sydney Daniels ’13 scored the first two goals for the Black and Gold, and Amanda Boulier ’11 closed the door on Nobles with the final tally of the game. Goalie Carmen MacDonald ’11 was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Dexter Varsity Hockey Wins 2011 NEPSAC Piatelli/Simmons Tournament!

Milton Academy Boys' Hockey: 2011 NEPSAC Stuart/Corkery Tournament Champions!

3/7/11

The boys’ varsity hockey team beat Kent School 2-1 in an intense, well-played game to win the NEPSAC Boys’ Hockey Championship in Salem, New Hampshire, on Sunday.

After a tight, scoreless first period, defensemen Jake Turrin (I) scored 1:47 into the second period. A little over a minute later, Kent tied the game up. Stellar goaltending by Sean Dougherty (I) kept Kent at bay for the remainder of the game. The winning goal came four minutes into the third period when T.J. Schneider (I) took a slapshot that bounced to the left of the goal; Sean Okita (I) was there to grab the puck, shoot and score.

Player of the Week
David Limoges (St. Hippolyte, QC), Senior forward at Albany Academy, recorded 4 goals and 3 assists in three victories for the Cadets. The victories include league wins over Berkshire and Canterbury. Limoges leads the Prep West conference in goals (18) and points (34).
Goalie of the Week
Ben Halford (Lenox, MA), Senior at Albany Academy, backboned the Cadets to three victories last week including two league wins over Berkshire and Canterbury. Over the three game stretch Halford stopped 72 of the 76 shots he faced.

Player of the Week
Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park, NY), Post-Graduate forward at The Canterbury School, recorded 4 goals in the Lawrenceville Tournament. Highlighting Rakoczy’s effort was a hat-trick in the Saint’s 5-4 victory over host Lawrenceville.
Goalie of the Week
Nick Ellis (Millersville, MD), Sophomore at The Pomfret School, stopped 72 of 79 shots (.911 save percentage) over a three game stretch earning victories over Groton and Holderness at the Groton-Lawrence Tournament.

Drew Smolcynski (Hatfield, PA), Junior forward at The Gunnery School, recorded 2 goals and 3 assists this week for the Highlanders. Smolcynski scored two of his teams three goals in a Berkshire win including the game-winner with just 27 seconds remaining in regulation.

Player of the Week
Penn Sednaoui (Bedford, NY), Senior at the Millbrook School, recorded 3 goals and 1 assist in helping his team get off to a 1-1 start this season.

Goalie of the Week
Mitch Gillam (Peterborough, Ontario), Senior at the Berkshire School, made 54 of 59 saves in leading his team to two victories over Albany Academy and Taft.

 
 
Choate Boys' Hockey: 2010 Martin/Earl Champions!

Congratulations to the Choate Boys' Varsity Ice Hockey team and coaches Pat Dennehy and Mike Velez for leading the players to an 8-4 victory over Berkshire Academy at the Martin/Earl Large Schools Boys' Ice Hockey Tournament in Salem N.H. on March 7.

After the first period, Choate led 2-1 with goals from Kyle Criscuolo and John Hagen. Choate was up 3-2 after the second period with a third goal scored by Hagen from Ben Foster and Daniel Linell. Choate won 8-4, surviving a 3-man advantage with the Berkshire goalie pulled. Nice work, boys, and a fine finish!

Kimball Union Academy: 2010 Piatelli/Simmons Champions!

The Kimball Union Boys Varsity Hockey team outdueled Dexter School 3-2 in double overtime to clinch the Piatelli/Simmons Small School New England Championship in Salem, NH. In front of a packed house at the Salem Ice Center, KUA got on the board first when PG Dan Cornell ripped a snap shot from the point on the power play that found the top corner, sophomore Thomas Flynn assisted on the play. With 10 seconds remaining in the first period Dexter would answer with a shot from the top of the circle that found the low stick side corner. After a scoreless second period the teams entered the third tied at one. Midway through the third sophomore Dennis Kravchenko put KUA up 2-1 when he broke in one on one and rifled a shot top corner past the Dexter goalie. A minute later Dexter answered when a shot from the point hit a KUA player and deflected in. With the scored 2-2 at the end of regulation the teams took the ice for overtime. KUA played a great overtime period as a team and created several chances to end the game, but the Dexter goalie Kevin Green came up big. With 30 seconds left in OT Kravchenko broke in alone off a great pass from junior Gabriel Veilleux and was hauled down. KUA took a power play opportunity into double overtime and cashed in when junior Peter LaFosse cranked a shot off a scrum that deflected right under the cross bar for the sudden death victory. The game was a fast paced contest that was entertaining for all involved. Senior Josh Dollinger, juniors Pat Doherty and Rafael Turcotte had great games on defense. The Wildcats ended the year 24-8-2, their second straight 20 win season.
