Phillips Academy’s Girls' Volleyball Takes 2010 New England Championship
November 22, 2010 --One week after both the boys and girls cross-country teams won their respective league championships, Phillips Academy’s girls volleyball team matched the achievement by taking home first place in the New England Prep School Girls Fall Volleyball Association tournament held at Deerfield Academy on Saturday, November 20.
The number one seed in the tournament, Andover first had to fight its way past third-seeded Choate in the semi-final match before earning the right to advance to the finals, where it took on Hotchkiss for the championship.
2007 Hotchkiss Volleyball Wins Class A Crown
The Hotchkiss Varsity Volleyball team ended the regular season ranked # 1 in the Class A division in New England on the strength of a 14-2 record. The final four of the tournament took place at the Forrest E. Mars Jr. Athletic Center at Hotchkiss.
The semifinal match had Hotchkiss playing Choate, one of two teams to defeat the Bearcats during the regular season. As always, Choate played very tenacious defense, never quit, and did its best to spoil the home court advantage. However, this proved to be a good day for the Hotchkiss Bearcats. The taller home team took over the play at net for much of the match, played excellent defense, and slowly gained control. The 3-0 final score does not indicate the excellent rallies that went on throughout the entire match. Winning in three games was a nice advantage for Hotchkiss because it gave the girls longer to rest before the finals.
